Julius Boros won the championship in an 18-hole playoff over Jacky Cupit and Arnold Palmer (Boros 70, Cupit 73, Palmer 76). The winning total of 293 is the highest winning score of the U.S. Open since World War II.

The 1963 U.S. Open was the second U.S. Open held at The Country Club and 8th major championship. The dated marked the 50th anniversary of amateur Francis Ouimet's historic win at The Country Club.
